How do I rate a restaurant?
I love going to restaurants.
Going to the heart of all the hustle and bustle, eating food made by people passionate about cooking, enjoying the whole experience of seeing how the ambiance complements the food, gawking at the effort interior designers have put in to make sure I have a pleasing experience, loving the effort a waiter might put in to make me feel warm and heard, and the feeling of satisfaction and content upon having an experience worth remembering.
When at the end of it all, I am asked to give the restaurant a rating out of 5, then I am left thinking. I hesitate to give a 5/5, a 4/5, or anything. Was it really a 5 out of 5? The food was great, but it was way too expensive, or maybe too loud, or something else made you hesitate to give it that perfect rating.
Alright, here's what I decided to do - Rate all those experiences individually.
- Menu
- Service
- Taste
- Environment
- Ambiance
- Value
Menu
How good is the menu? Are there items on it that shouldn't be there? How many items got me excited enough to order them? Did they have options to accommodate my friends who have dietary restrictions?
Service
How was my experience while I wasn't eating? How was the wait staff? Did I have to look for my waiter for 15 mins so that I could ask them to get me some water?
Taste
How good did the food taste? Is it doing justice to the cuisine it has been tagged with? Is it unique and is asking me to come back?
Environment
Was it too loud? Was it too quiet? How was the crowd? And to use a super cliched and really vague term - how was the vibe?
Ambiance
How were the interiors? Does it match the kind of environment and food being served?
